That is an accurate portrayal of the Marlies/Devils series. Albany has a real good team and it's been a hell of a series so far.

You are right - they are deserving of their many penalties - and you can't be expected to fend off that powerplay every time like they did in game 3.

Game 6 is gonna be entertaining.

Heard that Teuvo Teravainen might be on the block as well. Should the Devil's take a swing on him?

Probably going to be expensive. Although Chicago is in a position where draft picks may be more appealing to them than contracts.

Shaw definitely seems like a solid 3rd liner. He plays a hard game. Not many guys like him in the league. Still only 24.

For the leafs, if they could offer sheet him between $3M - $3.5M for say 4 years, I’d be good with that. Only costs a 2nd.

More in draft picks or bigger money than that and I’d pass.

Hi Todd,

Interesting read. I disagree a bit with you on your assessment of Shaw, though.

As the game changes and the league moves it to a more finesse/skill-based game, players like Shaw start to become more rare and highly sought after.

Watching Shaw on a nightly basis, I can tell you that he's the spark plug that makes the Hawks motor run. He's a dying breed of a player: gritty, goes in the corners, takes a beating in front of the net, plays physical (and bigger than he is) and poses skill. Not too many guys left, or coming up, like that.

Ever the agitator and fan favorite who brings his work boots to the rink. I'd hate to see him leave Chicago, but I think you'd like having him in NJ if it happened.

Tough call.

TT has not done much in Chicago, from my point of view. He plays better as a Center, but he has a small frame and always looks to avoid physical play--often resulting with him turning over the puck. Often times you don't even know he's in the lineup.

That being said, I've always thought that maybe that's a result of Chicago's system. I think TT would fair better somewhere like Arizona, Edmonton, etc. where he could be part of a younger core of guys focused on offense and not so much having to play both ways.

I'm not sure what kind of system the Devils play, but I think TT would be a major gamble. I have nothing against him and hope he finds his game, but right now he is a very average (at best) NHLer.

Exactly why I think the Devils should target him.

Yup. I think he could be another Palmieri style pick up in the making though. Chicago probably values Shaw more than TT as well, so he might not be to hard to acquire.

As a fan, I value Shaw far more than TT.

There is a strange, almost-obsession, with TT that many fans have out here. I think a lot of that has to do with the organization's marketing of him before he came over to North America. In my opinion, the way they built him up was really unfair--especially to a young, unproven player. They made him out like he possessed the same skill set and ability level as Kane. In terms of talent, Kane is a prodigy. The organization comparing TT to that level got many of the (uneducated/casual hockey fans) all excited and made impossible expectations for TT to live up to.

True and part of the problem with pro sports now.

Analytics obviously have a place in sports, but they've kind of taken over--especially baseball with sabermetrics. Now teams are built almost entirely on numbers. It takes the "gut" feeling out.

There was a really cool discussion about how the "big personality" manager in baseball is kind of dying out because they're no longer really running the team. The front office runs it and tells the manager what to do based on numbers. Gone are the days of having a hunch and laying down a bunt--now you need to call up to the clubhouse and have some nerd give you every obscure statistic and percentage of how the bunt has/hasn't worked in that particular situation.

The move is to trade adam larsson to edmonton for the 4th pick. This gives the devils two picks in the 1st dozen. tkachuk and keller/mcleod or jost, sure would speed up the rebuild.

I'd take him if we needed 3rd liners but that's all this team has and he'd probably be on the first line

Traditionally, trading a developed 4th overall for an undeveloped 4th overall does not speed up a rebuild.

Chicago probably has a higher price on Teuvo than I'd like to see NJ pay. The kid gets shoved around a lot and has not produced.

If the price was reasonable, I'd take the gamble. But I wouldn't give up anything but a draft pick. Even a 2nd Rounder would be a sell on age and potential more than anything he's actually done with his ice time.

You're better off trading with Edmonton for Yak. He's available cheaply. If you're gonna spend a second rounder you need to get someone decent like Hall. You might need to throw in Merrill.

I'd take Shaw but wouldn't offer too much for him. We are reshaping our bottom 6 after all. I think we should look for something better on the market first though. If nothing comes around then circle back to shaw.
